Ohio high school girls soccer: 2024 preseason All-Ohio team

As we prepare for a new high school sports season, USA Today Network sports writers in Ohio collaborated over the last month to select preseason All-Ohio teams for football, boys and girls soccer, and girls volleyball. We selected a 25-player team for each sport.

Today, we introduce the USA Today Network Preseason All-Ohio Girls Soccer Team, which includes 11 forwards, nine midfielders, three defenders and two goalkeepers.  

Forwards1. Sophia Sindelar, Rocky River

The 2023 Ms. Soccer and first-team Division II All-Ohio, the senior scored 59 goals and had 19 assists last season. She is a Florida commit and an All-American.

2. Hannah Pachan, Walsh Jesuit

The senior was the 2023 Division I Player of the Year after recording 33 goals and 11 assists a year ago. A Virginia Tech commit, she was named first-team All-Ohio and was an All-American for the second time after she led Walsh Jesuit to its 11th state championship in the sport.

3. Presley Pennekamp, Cincinnati Oak Hills

The Xavier University commit scored 46 goals with 10 assists as a junior last season to lead her team to a 15-4-2 record and the Greater Miami Conference championship. She was named to the All-America team by the United Soccer Coaches National Coaches Association and to the United Soccer Coaches of America All-Great Lakes Region team and was the district player of the year and first-team All-Ohio. She was the Enquirer’s co-soccer player of the year. She plays for Ohio Elite ECNL.

4. Sydnee Maxwell, Rosecrans

A two-time All-Ohio first-team selection and the East District Division III Player of the Year, she returns to lead the Bishops for her senior season. She had 35 goals and eight assists last year and has 89 goals and 26 assists for her career. She also was named NSSCA All-Region and has committed to DePaul University, where she has received a scholarship. She also has played for Ohio Premier Elite Club National League team for the last five years and will play for them again before college.

5. Anna Cornejo, Cincinnati Madeira

The senior is the reigning Cincinnati Hills League Player of the Year after leading the Amazons to the league championship and a 12-6-4 record with 21 goals and 16 assists. She was named first-team All-Ohio and all-district and was a member of the United Soccer Coaches of America All-Great Lakes Region team. She plays for Ohio Elite ECNL ’07.

6. Whitney Scott, Dublin Coffman

The senior, a Creighton commit, collected 28 goals and seven assists in helping Coffman go 15-3-1 last year. She was first-team all-district and second-team All-Ohio in Division I.

7. Camille Francis, Perrysburg

The junior was named first-team All-Ohio and was an All-American after collecting 20 goals and 10 assists last season.

8. Emma Ogdahl, Perrysburg

Now a junior, she was named first-team All-Ohio last season after collecting 25 goals and 11 assists.

9. Cameron Goddard, Johnstown

A high scorer who racked up 47 goals last season as a junior, she led the Johnnies to their first 10-win season since 2014 and was named to the Division III All-Ohio second team.

10. Charli Murphy, West Holmes

She wasted no time in lighting up nets last year as a freshman, scoring 43 goals for the Division II state semifinalist Knights. She will have an even bigger spotlight on her this year with the graduation of All-Ohioan teammate Allie McMillen.

11. Alyssa Fox, River View

One of the area’s most versatile players, the senior scored 22 goals on her way to being named second-team All-Ohio and first-team all-district a year ago. The goal-scoring ability of the MVL Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year gives the Bears a chance each time they take the field.

Other forwards receiving votes

Kyla Gasser, Fairfield Union; Grace Madison, Highland

Midfielders1. Tessa Knapp, Bay

The senior, a Notre Dame commit, was named first-team All-Ohio in Division II and was an All-American after collecting 58 goals and 16 assists in 2023.

2. Reagan Pentz, Walsh Jesuit

The senior, a Vanderbilt commit, was named second-team All-Ohio after totaling 12 goals and 10 assists last season.

3. Hattie Yugovich, Ontario

She earned All-Central Region, first-team All-Ohio, Division II District Player of the Year, first-team all-district, Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year and first-team All-MOAC honors as a sophomore last season. She finished with 32 goals and 18 assists last season after having 38 goals and 25 assists as a freshman.

4. Tessa Brooks, Bloom-Carroll

The senior standout had an outstanding junior season to help lead B-C to a Mid-State League-Buckeye Division title and the school’s first district championship. She scored 20 goals and had 26 assists en route to earning first-team All-Ohio and all-Central District honors.

5. Riley Zamensky, John Glenn

The second-team All-Ohio honoree tallied 32 goals with 12 assists in helping the Muskies win the MVL and reach the regional tournament last year as a junior. She is one of the area’s top scoring threats and has the vision to see the field and the ability to control the ball. She was also the MVL’s Midfielder of the Year.

6. Maddie Garber, Tri-Valley

The junior, who will be a three-year starter and two-year captain, is a dynamic player who can see and read the field well. The Division I East District Player of the Year is very strong on the ball, utilizing that to keep the ball and find open space and players on the field. The first-team All-MVL selection has led Tri-Valley in both goals and assists her first two seasons, accumulating 27 goals and 22 assists for 76 points.

7. Addi Pittman, Ontario

A second team All-Ohioan as a sophomore last season, when she also earned first-team all-district and first-team All-Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference honors after scoring 23 goals and handing out eight assists. She also collected 28 goals and 16 assists as a freshman.

8. Miller Spreen, Cincinnati Mariemont

A second-team all-state selection in 2023 and a member of the United Soccer Coaches of America All-Great Lakes Region team, the junior standout had 14 goals and nine assists in 16 games for the Warriors as a sophomore last year. She plays for Cincinnati United Premier ’08.

9. Avery Williams, Licking Valley

An often-overlooked player, competing on the still maturing Panthers, she is known in soccer circles, playing club for the national-qualifying Legend SC. The senior scored 20 goals as a junior, affecting play at both ends of the field with her relentless motor from the midfield.

Other midfielders receiving votes

Ivy Miller, Granville; Madelyn Genovese, Streetsboro; Erin Hallis, Crestwood; Delilah Rahe, Field

Defenders1. Bree Reder, Cincinnati Summit Country Day

A team captain this fall, she led the SCD back line last season as a sophomore for the Silver Knights, who won the Ohio Division II state championship. Her 2023 accolades included being an All-American, first-team All-Ohio and all-region, Southwest Ohio Player of the Year as well as league and district first-team honors.

2. Maren Degenhart, Upper Arlington

With the Butler commit leading the way, the Golden Bears defense allowed only 13 goals last fall and had 13 shutouts. She was first-team all-district and second-team All-Ohio in Division I as a junior last season, when UA went 19-3-1 and reached a regional final.

3. Braelyn Even, Hamilton Badin

The center-back, who plays for Cincinnati United Premier during club season, was named to the United Soccer Coaches of America All-Great Lakes Region team. The junior has been chosen for four consecutive years to the Girls Academy Mid-America Conference Talent ID Showcase.

Goalkeepers1. Gianna Mlynek, Cincinnati Anderson

The Xavier University commit is one of the city’s top returning goalkeepers after leading Anderson to a 12-4-3 record last season as a junior. She was first-team all-district and all-league after allowing 1.1 goals per game. She was called up to the Panamanian U17 National Team to train in 2022.

2. Sydney Lauffer, Granville

The dominance across the field for the Blue Aces meant she was rarely tested last season as a sophomore, but she was up to the task when needed. She made 21 saves for the Blue Aces, who recorded 10 shutouts and held 16 of 19 opponents to one goal or fewer.
