While I agree with letter writer Barbara Essington’s premise (“Lots to dislike about Harris”) that President Joe Biden had no intention until recently of abandoning his second-term campaign, I disagree that it was “Democrat elites” who forced Biden out. I would contend it was the American people who did so.
After Biden’s disastrous June debate performance, the administration and many in the party trotted out various excuses: “The president had a cold.” “The president had jet lag.” And, my favorite, “He’s really sharp between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.” That’s great if you’re applying to be a greeter at Walmart, not so much if your job title is “Leader of the Free World.”
Yet, there was no denying what Americans had seen: a president who was showing the mental and physical declines of age, and who was not miraculously going to become sharper during ages 82-86 (covering a second term).
