Showers possible this weekend, but most of Western Colorado will stay dry

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Showers are possible this weekend, especially on Sunday, but more of us will stay dry than get rain.

Mostly Dry Saturday

The weekend is quickly approaching. Some mountain showers and thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon. There’s a very small chance that a shower could stray away from the mountains and to the valleys, but most areas in the valleys will stay dry. Saturday’s highs will be in the low-to-mid 90s with morning lows ranging from upper 50s to mid-60s.

A Few Showers or Storms Possible Sunday

Sunday offers a better chance for some rain. Showers and thunderstorms will mainly stay over the mountains during the day. The valleys become fair game Sunday evening. Even then, however, the scattered nature of the showers and storms will leave more areas dry than get rain. Sunday’s highs will be in the upper 80s and lower 90s. Morning lows will range from upper 50s to mid-60s.

Drought Monitor Update

The Drought Monitor is updated every week. It incorporates rainfall and evaporation data starting at midnight Tuesday of the previous week to midnight Tuesday of the current week… then that information is released on Thursday. That is important because this week’s Drought Monitor update follows five days of rain. The biggest of those rainy days was after the midnight Tuesday cutoff, so that will be part of next week’s update. This week’s update was a good news-bad news update. It’s bad news in that it didn’t change. It’s good news in that it didn’t get any worse.

Drought Forecast

The Climate Prediction Center also released a new Drought Outlook today. It’s a forecast of expected drought conditions through the end of November. That showed more solid good news. The Drought Outlook released on Thursday indicates our developing drought could fade between mid-August and November 30.

Our Next 24 Hours

This evening will be clear. We’ll cool from upper 80s and lower 90s at 6 PM to mid-to-upper 80s at 8 PM, then to upper 70s and lower 80s at 10 PM. The rest of tonight will be clear. Low temperatures by morning will be near 64 degrees around Grand Junction, 57 degrees around Montrose, 59 degrees around Delta, 53 degrees around Cortez, and 66 degrees around Moab. Friday will be sunny and warm. High temperatures will be near 95 degrees around Grand Junction, 91 degrees around Montrose, 94 degrees around Delta, 91 degrees around Cortez, and 98 degrees around Moab.

Looking Ahead

Next week will start mostly dry, and the warmth will persist. Highs next Monday and Tuesday will be in the upper 80s and low-to-mid 90s. There are early indicates among our forecast data that the chance for rain could increase significantly for next Wednesday and Thursday. We’ll hold the chance of rain on the low side given the distant time frame. We’ll trend up with that chance of rain as confidence increases.
