Former Tennessee QB Nathan Peterman signs with the Las Vegas Raiders

After a brief stint as Tennessee’s quarterback that was memorable in all the wrong ways, Nathan Peterman has resurrected his football career.

It’s a journey that, nearly eight years after his final college snap, will continue in the NFL.

On Tuesday, the Las Vegas Raiders announced they had signed Peterman, who has played in the NFL since 2017, primarily as a backup. He was a free agent after being released by the New Orleans Saints on Friday, Aug. 2.

This is actually Peterman’s second go-around with the Raiders, with whom he played from 2018-21 while impressing then-head coach Jon Gruden — another figure with a strange relationship with the Vols and their fan base.

“This Nathan Peterman is growing on me,” Gruden told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 2019. “I know he’s got some nightmare performances in the NFL, but when you watch the film, you can see why: It’s not all his fault.”

Peterman played in 10 games for Tennessee across two ill-fated seasons with the Vols from 2013-14, a run that included two horrific starts.

He made his first career start in a 31-17 loss to Florida in 2013, a game in which he completed just 4 of 11 passes for five yards and accounted for three turnovers — two interceptions and a fumble. He was pulled from the game just before halftime.

The following year, he started against Alabama, but logged just two drives. He had two completions and 10 yards on four attempts before being replaced by Joshua Dobbs, who held on to the starting job for the rest of the season.

Since leaving Knoxville, he has been decidedly more successful.

He transferred to Pitt, where he took over as the starter early in the 2015 season. Over his two seasons with the Panthers, he thew for 5,142 yards, 47 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while leading his team to a pair of bowl games.

Peterman was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft, but began his professional career with yet another nightmarish start, throwing five interceptions in the first half of his first career start, a 54-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The 30-year-old has since played for the Raiders, Chicago Bears and Saints, completing 85 of 160 passes for 712 yards, four touchdowns and 13 interceptions over the course of his NFL career.
