BISMARCK — The North Dakota Industrial Commission has selected Nathan Anderson as its new Department of Mineral Resources executive director Wednesday morning, Aug. 14, after commissioners took an extra two weeks to reach a decision.
“We have with Nathan … someone who brings tremendous private sector experience and really great leadership experience, as you see the incredibly strong references he has from the teams that he’s built and the size of the scale of teams that he’s led,” Gov. Doug Burgum said.
Burgum and Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring joined Attorney General Drew Wrigley remotely to announce the final decision. The finalists were Anderson and Kevin Connors.

The Mineral Resources director is responsible for oil and gas development activities in North Dakota. Anderson will supervise the Oil and Gas Division assistant director, the state geologist and Department of Mineral Resources staff while communicating department actions to the public.
“I am honored to be chosen for this role and am excited to be able to serve the DMR, its employees, the energy industry and the people of the great state of North Dakota,” Anderson said in a release following the meeting. “I look forward to getting started in the near future.”
Anderson, who grew up in Minot, is a North Dakota State University graduate with 25 years of oil and gas industry experience, most recently having worked for Chevron in Colorado. He owns a company called 3B Investments.
Coming out of the private sector, Anderson will take a pay cut upon beginning at the department.
In the meeting on July 30, the commission discussed keeping
the preceding director, Lynn Helms,
around to consult in the leadership transition.
Commissioners looked to Helms’ legacy in the two weeks of deliberation, highlighting his experience before taking the position in 1998.
“We’ve got big shoes to fill,” Burgum said. “Part of Lynn’s success was the fact that when Lynn had joined us, that he had almost 24 years of industry experience.”
Connors, the other finalist, is assistant director for regulatory compliance and energy policy at the University of North Dakota’s Energy and Environmental Research Center. He worked under Helms for over 10 years.
“I just really respect both candidates for throwing their hat in the ring. It’s a tough decision,” Goehring said.
