Healey Told to Vacate as Massachusetts State House to Close

The Massachusetts State House is closing, forcing employees and elected officials including Governor Maura Healey to find somewhere else to earn their keep.

The historic gold-domed state capitol building that sits high atop Beacon Hill in Boston was damaged in a two-alarm fire on July 18, 2023 and must close for repairs. That will happen this month.

State House News Service (SHNS) says, “The capitol building and its underground parking garage will close at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2024, according to a memo sent by Administration and Finance spokesman Matt Murphy.”

SHNS says, “Staff and the public will not be able to access the premises during the shutdown, and building employees have been asked to work off-site.”

The Massachusetts State House, which houses the Massachusetts General Court (state legislature) and the offices of the Governor of Massachusetts, first opened in January of 1798.

The building, designed by architect William Bullfinch, cost $133,300 to construct, an amount that was five times over budget.

!0 Boston News reported that “a joint investigation determined the cause of the fire to be accidental, resulting from electrical faults in two lines that run from an electrical vault near a guard shack to a pull box in the sub-basement of the State House annex building.”

The station reported, “There is no evidence to suggest the fire was intentionally set.”

Murphy’s memo states, “This temporary closure is to allow for the replacement of power cable in connection with the July 2023 fire.”

Governor Healey, state lawmakers, and all others who work on Beacon Hill are expected to be displaced for a total of four days.
