The Iowa high school football season is almost here, and so is the Des Moines Register’s ranking of the top 15 sophomore recruits in the state for the 2024 IHSAA football season.

From Norwalk rising star Luke Brewer to a player making a name for himself like Jaxx DeJean, there is no shortage of college-level talent developing in the sophomore class.

There is a difference between the top players and the top recruits – although there is a lot of overlap – so this list focuses solely on recruiting.

Here are the top 15 sophomore recruits ahead of the 2024 high school football season.

1. Luke Brewer

Norwalk

Offers: Iowa, Iowa State, Georgia, Kansas State, Miami, Tennesee, Toledo

Brewer put together a modest freshman season: 313 yards and one touchdown on offense, with 6.5 tackles on defense. But the 6-foot-4, 210-pound tight end separates himself from the pack. He’s incredibly strong, gets downfield with ease, makes catches look easy and defenders have a hard time matching up with him one-on-one.

2. Landon Blum

Woodbine

Offers: Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State

This 6-5 receiver collected a few offers after a freshman year stat line of 839 yards and 17 touchdowns. He manages to avoid the lankiness that often comes with his size and shows impressive speed, reliable hands and a lot of room for growth.

3. Jaxx DeJean

OABCIG

Offers: Iowa, Kansas State, UAB

Between offense and defense, DeJean is a beast. The 6-4, 200-pound athlete is only getting started. If his easy-looking completions, stealthy speed and general do-whatever-it-takes style of play are any indication, DeJean is going to be a problem for opponents.

4. Jaxson McIntire

Clear Lake

Offer: Iowa State

This 6-foot, 190-pound player is truly an athlete in every sense of the word. He throws the ball well but can do a bit of everything. His speed stands out first, but there are a lot of things to like about McIntire’s multifaceted abilities.

5. Tate Wallace

Iowa City Regina

Wallace was a production machine in his first season of high school football: 430 yards and three touchdowns on offense, 22 tackles, one sack and one interception on defense as a linebacker. Built well, brings a ton of athleticism to the field and just doesn’t quit.

6. Wyatt Valenta

Dallas Center-Grimes

The size is there – 6-2, 205 pounds – and he looks bigger with the way he plays. Valenta’s on-field awareness might be one of his best attributes, right behind his ability to separate himself in coverage as a wide receiver.

7. Carlos Blount Jr.

Ankeny Centennial

The 6-1, 200-pound two-way player recorded 15 tackles – including 11 solo takedowns – as a linebacker in his freshman season. Size, speed and strength are all there. Now, it’s just about developing those skills.

8. Darrian Anderson

Sioux City East

A 6-4, 305-pound offensive lineman is not someone opponents want to see on the other side of the line. But Anderson is the perfect combination of brute size and stealthy speed.

9. Raif Jensen

Ridge View

The 6-foot quarterback’s stats speak for themselves: over 1,000 total yards and seven touchdowns on offense, with a 54% completion rate as a freshman. He needs to do a bit of everything on both sides of the ball while playing for Ridge View, and it’s aided his development.

10. David William

Storm Lake

High school football fans saw a sample of what William could be, with over 400 total yards and six touchdowns on offense and 17.5 tackles on defense. At 6-1, there is room for the athlete to grow, but the key elements are there.

11. Cooper Chebuhar, DE, Southeast Polk12. Josiah Smith, ATH, Cedar Rapids Kennedy13. Will Clausen, DL, Benton14. Cael Kongshaug, QB/ATH, Cedar Rapids Prairie15. AJ Hodge, ATH, Iowa City West
