For Brown, too, it’s personal.
“My mother had a thyroid cancer this past year,” Brown said. “You’re really worried about whether they are going to get it all out.”
Brown grew up in Columbia, Louisiana, a small rural town situated on the Ouachita River in the northern part of the state. That also makes this a personally meaningful challenge: The grant stipulates that the device has to be delivered to two rural hospitals at the end of the five years.
“We can’t build a million-dollar device,” Brown said. “We have to build something that is going to work in a rural hospital where they don’t have a lot of resources.”
“To me, that’s fun,” said Brown. “And it hits close to home for me, because of where I’m from.”
