Did Team USA win the gold medal count?
Some bettors are having to deal with different interpretations of the answer to that question after the conclusion of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Officially, the United States won 40 gold medals, the same as China, with those countries well ahead of Japan, which finished with 20 gold medals in France.
But sportsbooks are settling bets on the gold medal count differently.
ESPN reported that ESPN Bet, DraftKings and FanDuel used the “dead heat” rule to settle their gold medal bets, paying out half the bet at the offered odds.
BetMGM, however, deemed the U.S. the winner of the gold medal count because of a tiebreaker that went to the amount of silver medals won by each country, according to ESPN. Team USA took home 44 of those medals, compared to 27 for China.
Some other sportsbooks settled the bets by paying out bets on both Team USA and China, according to ESPN’s reporting.

Team USA ended up with 126 total medals, also winning 42 bronze medals in Paris.
Interestingly, the gold medal count would have been a moot point if Shelby McEwen had shared the gold medal in the men’s high jump, but the Team USA standout ended up taking home the silver after losing a jump-off against New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr on Saturday.
The two would have both won golds if they decided against doing the jump-off, but McEwen said both jumpers agreed to the jump-off.
“He said it first, and I agreed to it,” McEwen told The Washington Post. “At some point, I kind of got fatigued. I maybe would have shared it with him, for sure. But I agreed to it, and it was all good.”
