“American Idol” is giving Nebraskans a chance to shine, as the popular singing competition hosts virtual state-wide auditions. The auditions allow aspiring singers to showcase their talent and move one step closer to potentially snagging a coveted ticket to Hollywood from the comfort of their homes.

The auditions are set to take place on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

With an online auditioning format, contestants can skip the waiting line without missing their chance for a golden ticket. The new format offers three forms of audition submissions: Nebraska statewide open call auditions on Aug. 14, West and Midwest open call auditions on Sept. 4, or submitting a video audition.

“We’ve had online submissions since our return to ABC, but with the restrictions during the pandemic, we moved our in-person auditions to Zoom,” said “American Idol” Producer Katie Fennelly. “This way, we can keep everyone safe while maintaining the excitement and authenticity of live auditions.”

The virtual auditions are run just like in-person ones, with producers in various breakout rooms evaluating the performances. The shift to online has been positively received, providing convenience and opening up the auditions to more people who might not have been able to travel for an in-person audition.

“We’ve done a lot of work with Zoom to make sure the audio is great, and we have different workarounds for everybody, whether you’re playing an instrument or have someone playing an instrument for you,” explained Fennelly. “We’ve got it kind of down to a science at this point and it’s been really great, and we absolutely love this portion of the season.”

While the virtual auditions are not aired in full, snippets and clips of standout performances may be featured throughout the season, especially if a contestant advances through the process.

The auditions serve as a preliminary phase, with successful contestants moving on to virtually meet the showrunner and executive producers before facing the judges.

In more than two decades of “American Idol” seasons, producers have woven contestants’ backstories, trials, and triumphs into the show. According to Fennelly, that personal touch will continue to be a key element, even with the shift to online auditions.

“We want to get to know who you are,” said Fennelly. “From the start we want to get to know the artist and the person who’s chasing this dream.”

The online audition process has already seen local success, as shown by Cam Amen, a former contestant from Nebraska who auditioned through Idol Across America’s virtual process last season. Amen ended up snagging a platinum ticket from the judges, showing just how much potential there is for discovery through these auditions.

This season, “American Idol” is welcoming back a familiar face: Carrie Underwood, who rose to fame as an Idol contestant 20 years ago, is joining the judging panel. This is the first time a former contestant has ever held the spot as a permanent judge in the shows history.

“It’s exciting to have Carrie on the panel,” Fennell shared, noting that Underwood’s season marked her first year with American Idol 20 years ago. “She’s had an amazing career after her success on Idol, and she knows what these singers in these towns are going through.”

As for tips and tricks to a successful audition, the answer is talent and integrity.

“Our advice to potential contestants is simple: be yourself,” Fennelly advised. “We want to hear your unique voice and perspective.”
