Sophomore Thomas Curry fired a 1-under 69 on the Chaska Town Course to lead a group of five Arkansas Razorbacks in the opening round of the U.S. Amateur on Monday outside Minneapolis.
Half of the field of 312 played the par-70 Chaska course while the other half competed at par-72 Hazeltine National Golf Club. The players will swap courses for Tuesday’s second round after which the field will be reduced to 64 for match play.
Curry’s 1-under score was tied for 49th. The Texarkana native birdied the longest hole on the course, the 562-yard 9th on his last hole of the day, and made par on every other hole.

Pinto birdied 11, 13 and 15 on the back nine and was at 2-under at the turn but he played the front in 4-over par.
Arkansas signee Gerardo Gomez of Mexico carded a 3-over on the Hazeltine course and signee Erich Fortlage of Paraguay had an 8-over on the Hazeltine course with one birdie.
Tom Fischer of Birmingham, Ala., and Paul Chang of China were the first-round co-leaders with 6-under rounds of 64 at Chaska. Eight golfers are tied at 4-under, all on Chaska.
