The boil-water advisory remains in effect for some Pennsylvania American Water customers after a weekend of issues caused by a water main break.
Customers who are part of the company’s Mechanicsburg system were told Monday afternoon they still need to boil their water. Pa. American Water said it received “acceptable results that meet regulatory standards” after completing its first round of water quality sampling tests.
“Upon receiving acceptable results from the second round of testing, we will communicate to customers that the boil water advisory has been lifted through our emergency notification system,” the water company said in a statement.
Before the company began its rounds of testing, water pressure was restored for customers on Sunday afternoon.
Under the advisory, some Cumberland County restaurants muddled through and remained open while others closed. Matt Flinchbaugh, co-owner of Flinchy’s in Lower Allen Township, told PennLive that they were buying ice, canned sodas and bottled water, and boiling water to use for cleaning and food preparation.
The advisory was announced on Friday night after the system experienced a water pressure drop caused by a main break, the company said. The issue forced 42,000 customers under the Mechanicsburg system to boil water before using it.
Most customers on the Mechanicsburg system live in Cumberland County, including Camp Hill, Lemoyne, New Cumberland, Shiremanstown, West Fairview and Wormleysburg boroughs; East Pennsboro, Hampden, Lower Allen, Silver Spring townships; parts of Middlesex and Upper Allen townships. Others live in parts of Fairview and Newberry townships in northern York County.
