Malleck among 312 players in United States Amateur field at Hazeltine National Golf Club

The 124th playing of the United States Amateur Golf Tournament is being held at Hazeltine National Golf Club and Chaska Town Course over the first two rounds. Hazeltine will host the field of 64 for the match play portion to determine this year’s winner.

CHASKA, MN- The history behind Hazeltine Golf Course in Chaska, MN goes all the way back to 1966 when the course hosted the United States Women’s Open.

Hazeltine, located in Chaska, MN was founded in 1962 and has also been the host to the 1970 United States Men’s Championship, 1983 Senior Open: the 2009 PGA Championship and the 2016 Ryder Cup.

This is the 15th national championship hosted by the club.

Hazeltine was designed to host national championships. Some of the features include; beautifully landscaped fairways, majestic woods and water which challenges the players and leads to large illustrious greens.

Reed Malleck

York’s Reed Malleck gets in some practice holes in on Sunday, August 11th at Hazeltine National Golf Course. He along with Omaha’s Trevor Gutschewski will be among the field of 312 golfers vying for a spot in the field of 64 match play competitors.

A total of 312 players teed it up on Monday morning in the 124th addition of the United States Amateur Championship at both Hazeltine and Chaska Town Course with the top 64 players after two rounds of stroke play advancing to the match play portion of the event.

York’s Reed Malleck, fresh off his Nebraska stroke play championship at the Fremont Country Club along with Omaha’s Trevor Gutschewski who won the United States Amateur Match play title are both in the field this week.

Both golfers were in the afternoon wave which teed off after 1 p.m. and both Nebraska golfers were on the Hazeltine National Golf Course.

The leader after one round is Paul Chang, from the People’s Republic of China as he fired a 6-under 64 at the Chaska Town Course. The top seven spots on the leaderboard belong to golfers who played at Chaska. In second place is Cooper Claycomb from Bowling Green Kentucky.

The best round at Hazeltine was turned in by James Aschfield of Wales with a 69.

Gutscheski ended his day at 5-over par and at press time that was a tie for 231st place. With a back nine of 37 and a front nine of 40.

Malleck has a much tougher road to climb as he was 12-over with one hole to play at press time. Both he and Gutschewski will be in the first wave this morning. Gutschewski will go off at 7:55 a.m. and Malleck at 8:28 a.m.

As of press time even par will get you to the round of 64, but a lot can change in the second round with so many of the leaders having to play at Hazeltine.
