Mapping Maine: A Boothbay Region Historical Society fundraiser

Please join Boothbay Region Historical Society for their biggest fundraiser of 2024. Once again they’re partnering with Harbor Theater, bringing you special historical programming in a wonderful cinema setting. This year we are celebrating Maine’s (and Boothbay’s) cartographic history with a program entitled, Mapping Maine.

This packed evening includes a special viewing of the MPBN “From the Vault” documentary, “Maine on the Map,” originally shown in 1996. The film focuses on the development of mapping in Maine. Bringing the topic of maps into the present day and Boothbay region, Libby Bischof, Ph.D., executive director of the Osher Map Library will then join us to give her talk “The Romance Map of Maine: Boothbay Women and Pictorial Mapmaking in the 20th Century.” The talk uses a beautifully illustrated 1936 map of Maine, compiled by Boothbay schoolteacher Grace F. Dodge, and summer resident Alice Fowler, and illustrated by Mildred Greene to discuss the concept of pictorial maps, which rose to popularity in the 20th century.

Prints of the Romance Map of Maine will be available for purchase at the event. Another rare, pictorial map print, “Boothbay Harbor and Vicinity” is also being raffled off at the end of the evening. More information can be found at
