The Summer Olympic games come to an end as fans of USA and the Gators have a lot of medals to celebrate

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – Hard to believe the Gator football season is going to start in less than three weeks with games taking place even sooner than that. Florida held a scrimmage over the weekend but as usual not much information comes out of that since media is not allowed to see it. Suffice to say Coach Billy Napier seems pleased with where his team is at right now, but do you know of a coach who is not pleased with his team at this point? Just a few more days to go and then we’ll really start to see where things shake out.

Just when it seemed there was going to be a settlement in that $2.78B federal antitrust suit filed against the NCAA, another lawsuit has been filed asking a judge to deny preliminary approval of the deal. The Power Five Conferences and the NCAA had agreed to pay billions of dollars to players who were denied the chance to earn money off the use of their name, image and likeness, dating back to 2016. This new lawsuit says that players would be settling for “pennies on the dollar” and that the conferences and the NCAA should be made to pay out more. A preliminary hearing on the proposed settlement is scheduled for September 5th. Stay tuned on this one.

The Paris Summer Olympic games wind down and it has been a good Olympics both for the United States as a whole and for current and former Gator athletes that competed, many of whom won medals. I thought the television coverage was excellent and ratings for these games went through the roof. While it was fun to watch the athletes of the United States, part of the charm of the games is to learn more about other athletes from around the world and to see how good they are, and that was certainly showcased in these games as well. All in all, Paris did well as an Olympic host as well.

While we wait for college and pro football to start, the Major League Baseball season is winding down and it can’t end soon enough for the Chicago White Sox. They endured a 21-game losing streak, tied for the worst all time, and finally fired their manager. But what manager could do well with that rag tag group? This team has a chance to be even worse than the expansion 1962 New York Mets who lost 120 games while winning only 40. But that was in an expansion year, the manager shouldn’t be fired, the whole front office should be let go for the disastrous roster moves that have been made to get the team to this embarrassing low point. It will be interesting to see how long it takes this franchise to recover from this.
