NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WLNE) — The United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut announced today that a man was sentenced for possessing a stolen vehicle and violating the conditions of his supervised release.
23-year-old Edwin Cordero formerly of Stratford and Bridgeport was sentenced to approximately 11 months, time already served, followed by three years of supervised release.
According to officials, Cordero was sentenced to 30 months back in April of 2022 for his role in an auto theft ring.
Officials said the ring Cordero was a part of stole numerous vehicles in Connecticut and neighboring states.
Cordero was released from federal prison in March of 2023.
On August 8, 2023, two vehicles were reported stolen from a residence in Westerly, R.I.
One of the vehicles was found unoccupied and out of gas shortly after in Groton Connecticut near Exit 89 on I-95.
Officials said the other vehicle, an Infinity Q50, was traced back to Cordero on August 13, 2023, when the victim of the theft reported an iPhone that was in the vehicle at the time of the theft was being backed up to the iCloud account associated with the phone.
A review of the account revealed photos and videos of Cordero with a gun on his lap and an image of another individual posing on the hood of another stolen car parked near Cordero’s Bridgeport residence.
Officials said Cordero was arrested the following day after he and others attempted to flee after crashing the Q50 into multiple cars on Success Avenue in Bridgewater.
On May 22, 2024, Cordero pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen vehicle.
Officials said Cordero has been ordered to pay $21,336.59 in restitution. Cordero also has a restitution order of $75,198 from his previous federal case.
