Kamala Harris and Tim Walz fire up Philadelphia campaign rally

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris introduces her vice presidential pick, Tim Walz, during a campaign rally in Philadelphia.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ newly picked running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, is coming to Rhode Island for a fundraiser.

The state Democratic Party is planning to hold an event to support the Harris-Walz ticket, state party chairwoman Liz Beretta-Perik confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

Perik said the date for the event had not yet been confirmed.

The fundraiser was first reported by WPRI-TV.

Democratic National Committeeman Joe Paolino Jr., one of the people involved in putting the event together, said the hope is to hold the fundraiser in Newport on Friday, Aug. 16.

“I have lots of people calling me about it. The last time it was like this was when Michelle Obama came to my house,” Paolino said.

Newport fundraisers for presidential candidates are normal occurrences for candidates in both parties during most election cycles.

In 2016, Mike Pence, running mate to eventual winner Donald Trump, and Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s VP pick, attended fundraisers in Newport.

The most recent major party presidential fundraiser in Rhode Island featured Harris’ husband Douglas Emhoff on Block Island.

Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently attended a fundraiser in Saunderstown on July 22 at Plum Street Bistro.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include a fundraising appearance by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in Rhode Island.
