A new poll has delivered a major blow to former president Donald Trump as Democratic nominee Kamala Harris climbs in popularity in three battleground states, with respondents determining she is a more level-headed option for the top job.
The Vice President has surpassed Trump in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan – three crucial swing states that will determine the election.
Almost 2,000 registered voters were polled by the New York Times and Siena College.
Harris is enjoying a four-point lead over Trump in Wisconsin – 50 per cent to 46 per cent – and a two-point lead – 48 per cent to 46 per cent- across the three states, with young voters and people of colour pushing her ahead.
According to the poll, voters also found the Vice President to be the more even-tempered, intelligent, and honest candidate.
The new numbers are a blow for former president Trump, whose popularity peaked during the Republican National Convention last month when the GOP appeared more united than ever, but has been steadily weaning since Harris took over from Biden- who was largely considered by both red and blue voters to be unfit for the job.
Earlier New York Times polls had Trump leading well ahead of Biden.
When it comes to key issues in the 2024 election, voters were divided, trusting Trump to tackle economic and immigration issues better than Harris, but putting their faith in the Vice President to handle abortion and democracy better than Trump.
Forty one per cent of respondents felt that Trump would bring forth changes that would be “very bad for the country” while 29 per cent said the same of Harris.
Voters were also dissatisfied with Trump’s pick for running mate, JD Vance.
The polls were conducted among 1,973 registered voters from August 5 to 9, suggesting Harris’ announcement of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on August 5 was well received by voters.
The majority of survey respondents indicated that their primary source of news is social media, followed closely by national television networks such as CBS, NBC, or ABC, and then Fox News.
The pair are scheduled to debate on ABC next month, a surprising move considering Trump’s initial reluctance as his new opponent continues to secure positive momentum since announcing her election campaign less than a month ago.
The former president also called for two additional debates on NBC and Fox, which Vice President Kamala Harris has not yet agreed to.
