Bucktail fire 60% contained in Montrose County

Fire crews gained 60% containment on the Bucktail fire burning on 7,202 acres northeast of Nucla in Montrose County, officials said in an update Sunday.

Rain helped tamp down the fire Saturday, allowing firefighters to increase containment from 10% Saturday to 60% Sunday, U.S. Forest Service officials said.

The fire sparked on Aug. 1 and is burning in the Uncompahgre National Forest and on Bureau of Land Management land. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Fire officials expect continued rain will help firefighters gain more containment, and the number of people fighting the fire will decrease “significantly” in the next few days.

Colorado 90 reopened to traffic over the weekend, though some roads remain closed near the fire.
