After three straight dominant gold medal showings in the Olympics, the United States has to settle for competing for the next-best thing, a bronze medal shot against the Netherlands. The Americans are 6-for-6 medaling since women’s water polo became an Olympic sport in 2000 with three golds, two silvers and bronze. The U.S. lost a shootout to Australia, 6-5, in Thursday’s semifinal round to fall into the bronze game.
The Netherlands also lost a shootout in the semifinals to fall out of gold medal contention, falling to Spain in a shootout, 5-4, after playing to a 14-14 draw in regulation. The Dutch side’s only other loss came by shootout to Australia in Group A play before winning two straight and advancing to the semis.
