DNA Cracks Montana Cold Case; Suspect Died by Suicide Before Arrest

Nearly three decades after 15-year-old Danielle “Danni” Houchins was found dead near a fishing access site in Montana, authorities have finally identified her killer as Paul Hutchinson. The breakthrough came as a result of advances in DNA technology and forensic genetic genealogy. Hutchinson, a married father of two, died by suicide shortly after being interviewed by investigators.

The Case That Went Cold

On September 21, 1996, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Houchins left her home in Belgrade, Montana. She was never seen again.

When her family reported her missing, an extensive search ensued. Later that day, her mother discovered Houchins’ truck abandoned at a popular fishing access site on the Gallatin River.

The search led to the discovery of Houchins’ body, face down in shallow water. Despite the collection of DNA evidence and numerous interviews, no arrests were made, and the case eventually went cold.
