Remains of World War II soldier Bartlett to be buried in SD

A South Dakota soldier killed during World War II will be buried Saturday in northeastern South Dakota.

The remains of U.S. Army Cpl. Robert Bartlett will be interred at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Edmunds County, which is southeast of Bismarck-Mandan across the state border. Isburg Funeral Home of Pierre, South Dakota, will perform graveside services.

Bartlett, a Pierre native, was a crew member of an M5A1 Stuart light tank assigned to Company A of the 744th Tank Battalion. He went missing in action July 26, 1944, at age 22, after his tank was struck by an enemy shoulder-fired rocket during battle with German forces in Saint-Germain-d’Elle, France, according to the U.S. Army.

Remains were exhumed in April 2018 from Normandy American Cemetery in France for laboratory analysis and identification. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency this past May confirmed the remains as Bartlett. Officials relied on dental and anthropological analysis, circumstantial evidence and DNA analysis.

Bartlett’s name is recorded on the Walls of the Missing at Normandy American Cemetery, an American Battle Monuments Commission site in Colleville-sur-Mer, France, along with the others still missing from World War II. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for.
