Paris Olympics: What to look for, what to watch on August 9

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — We have reached the third-to-last day of the XXXIII Olympiad in Paris and it’s going to be one filled with medal events for almost the entire day, with the first one at 1:30 a.m. and the last just before 5 p.m.

The penultimate day of track & field brings us the anticipated 4x100m relay finals while the whole of France will be glued to their televisions for the men’s soccer final before the debut of a brand new Olympic sport. Here is what to watch for the 14th day of the Paris Olympics.

Paris Olympics highlights: Momentous day for USA track & field, basketball

USA go for track relay gold

Eight track and field finals happen on Friday and two of the biggest will be in the 4x100m relays. Team USA feels it could finally get gold in the men’s relay with Noah Lyles and Fred Kerley likely leading the way as they search for its first gold in the event since 2000 at 1:45 p.m.

Before that, Sha’Carri Richardson and Gabby Thomas look to form a dream women’s team racing at 1:30 p.m. seeking a first gold since 2016. The other must-watch track final will be the 400m hurdles between USA’s Rai Benjamin and Norway’s Karsten Warholm at 3:45 p.m.

Big day for France with soccer final, breaking debut

The French people will all gather at 6:00 p.m. local time to watch its men’s soccer team go for gold at the Parc des Princes against Spain.

France, managed by legendary striker Thierry Henry, is looking to win its first gold medal in men’s soccer since 1984 and complete the trifecta of major tournament wins (World Cup, Euros, Olympics). It’s opponent Spain could pull off an amazing double of winning the Euros and Olympics in the same season, having beaten France in the semifinals of the Euros in July.

The newest Olympic sport will be debuting Friday as breaking makes its first appearance. The girls will be up first in the competitive form of “breakdancing” with the final taking place just after 3 p.m. eastern.
