BOSTON (WWLP) – A Massachusetts man wanted in connection with a series of rape charges, who has been on the run for more than three decades, was captured after a police pursuit in Los Angeles.

A suspect identified as 71-year-old Stephen Paul Gale was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service in Massachusetts in March for aggravated rape, armed robbery, and kidnapping. Recently, genetic genealogy identified Gale as the suspect responsible for a series of rapes in Boston from 1989 to 1990, known as the Boston Strip Mall Rapist.
US Marshals said that Gale was on the run for many years before he was publicly identified as the suspect. He was last seen in 2008. They believe he lived in different states, including Las Vegas, Nevada while using aliases that included Stephen Pisarcik, John Rossi, and Paul Costa.
On Thursday, Gale was arrested by LAPD after leading police in pursuit for an hour and a half. According to our sister station KTLA, the chase was initiated around when Gale was in San Pedro.
The suspect drove at moderate speeds, only hitting 60 miles per hour for a moment while obeying most traffic signals. Police attempted several PIT maneuvers, but he accelerated each time, avoiding a collision. He was also able to avoid two spike strips but eventually ran over a third after getting off the 405 Freeway.
When he turned into Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, he found himself with nowhere to go as officers quickly surrounded the vehicle with guns drawn. Complying with police commands, Gale opened the door and put his hands up, though he appeared to be having physical issues that made it difficult for him to exit the car and stand on his own.

Gale is charged with four counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, and a count of armed robbery of two women in a Framingham, Mass. store in 1989. He is also wanted for questioning in a series of similar violent sexual assaults in the greater Boston area between 1989 and 1990, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
The Massachusetts US Marshals Service opened the case at the request of the Framingham Police Department, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
