Changes Maine made to its education anti-discrimination law before and after a US Supreme Court ruling that struck down the “sectarian exclusion” in a state student tuitioning program likely comply with the US Constitution, a federal judge ruled.
The changes included adding gender identity, color, religion, and ancestry as protected classes under the Maine Human Rights Act and narrowing the statute’s exception for religious entities, the US District Court for the District of Maine said. They also removed from the MHRA’s definition of “educational institution” an exclusion for single-sex schools, the court said.
