Paris Olympics: Holloway, McLaughlin-Levrone win gold in hurdles; LeBron James, USA men reach title game

Paris Olympics Day 13

American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone needed just 50.37 seconds to win the women’s 400-meter hurdles competition Thursday in Paris, breaking her own world record and taking home the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

McLaughlin-Levrone successfully defended her gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

“Obviously, there are people next to you and they’re going to push you, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t focus on the barriers in front of you,” McLaughlin-Levrone said, according to ESPN.com. “That was my focus, trying to be as efficient as I could over my 10 hurdles and trying to lower that time every time.”

American Anna Cockrell won the silver and Femke Bol of the Netherlands held on to win the bronze while fading down the stretch.

“I screwed it up,” Bol said, according to ESPN. “I’m not sure where I made the mistake. I just got so much lactic acid with 300 meters to go. I’m not sure why; I really have no explanation. This is just a bad race.”

“It means the world, to officially have it,” Holloway said, NBC Olympics reports. “I’m beside myself right now, so happy about everything going on. I knew I was in shape, I knew I was capable of completing this feat and I officially did it.”

NBC reports Holloway hasn’t lost a race or heat since September.

In the 200 meter, American Noah Lyles had hoped to repeat his gold-medal performance from the 100 meters but wasn’t feeling well because of he contracted COVID-19. Lyles (19.70 seconds) still won the silver medal, behind Letsile Tebogo of Botswana (19.46 seconds) and just ahead of fellow American Kenny Bednarek, Yahoo! Sports reports.

“(COVID) definitely affected my performance,” Lyles said.

Lyles will not run on the men’s 4×100 team because of the illness. USA Today reports most athletes were not upset Lyles still competed in the 200 meters after being diagnosed with COVID and possibly exposing them to the illness.

In the women’s long jump, American Tara Davis-Woodhall recorded 7.1 meters (more than 23 feet) to win the gold medal, USA Today reports.

“I tried so hard to just keep on being positive this year and keep on being motivated,” Davis-Woodhall said. “That motivation turned to manifestation and manifestation turned into a reality. And the reality is: I’m an Olympic gold medalist.”

American Jasmine Moore won the bronze and the defending gold-medalist, Malaika Mihambo of Germany, won silver.

Akron native LeBron James will have a chance to add a third Olympics gold medal to his resume after the U.S. men’s basketball team overcame a 17-point deficit and defeated Serbia, 95-91, in a semifinal game.

“Big-time win for us,” James said afterward. “We knew we were going to be challenged. We knew it was going to be the toughest game up to date, but it was a true total effort.”

James had a triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, but it was Steph Curry who led the comeback with 36 points as the U.S. was still down 11 with eight minutes to play, Yahoo! Sports reports.

“We can look back at this game as the one that challenged us and tested us,” Curry said. “The one you will remember because of the circumstances of being down the entire game and needing to come back.”

U.S. coach Steve Kerr said James played a huge role in the victory, USA Today reports.

“LeBron James is such an amazing basketball player,” Kerr said. “He guarded (three-time NBA MVP Nikola) Jokic most of the fourth quarter and just all the little stuff that he was doing defensively to thwart Serbia – rebounding, pushing the ball in transition.”

The U.S. will play France in the gold medal game at 5 a.m. EST Saturday. The game will be broadcast on USA Network.
