Hoover coaches, prisoner swap, Roy Wood Jr.: Down in Alabama

Hoover coaches

The Hoover City Board of Education has accepted resignations from Hoover High head football coach Drew Gilmer and defensive coordinator Adam Helms, AL.com’s Ben Thomas reports.

The two had been on administrative leave. The school system announced an investigation just as videos were circulating of the coaches interacting with players during practice. Lawyers for one player’s family called the coaches’ behavior “physical abuse and extreme humiliation.”

Gilmer was a high-profile hire for the Bucs this offseason. He had just won two of the past three Class 6A state titles at Clay-Chalkville. Class 7A Hoover, of course, is a nationally known program that had racked up 11 state titles in the past but were looking to rebuild under Gilmer.

Hoover has named Chip English its interim football coach. English has coached at Grissom and Albertville. Last year he took the quarterbacks-coach job at Hoover.

Still in a Russian prison

The recent prisoner swap among nations including the United States and Russia involved 26 prisoners. It brought the release of big-named inmates such as journalist Evan Gershkovich and corporate security executive Paul Whelen. Prisoners were released from the U.S., Russia, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway and Belarus.

But the releases did not include David Barnes, the Alabama man in a Russian prison whose custody battle with his ex-wife led to accusations that he abused his two sons, reports AL.com’s William Thornton.

Prosecutors in Texas found the accusations not credible, but when he went to Russia to see his sons he was arrested and found guilty. He’s been there for two years.

Not helping his case: He hasn’t been designated a “wrongful detainee” as some of those released were.

Barnes is originally from Gadsden and has lived in Huntsville. His sister, Carol, said he was devastated by not being among those released but wasn’t losing hope. “He has a lot of faith. He prays a lot. He’s trying to keep up his outlook on everything. He’s not the kind of person to give up. He’s chased his kids for five years now. He’s going to keep fighting.”

‘Have I Got News For You’

You may have seen him on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” Now, Birmingham native Roy Wood Jr. has his own CNN show, reports AL.com’s Mary Colurso.

The comedian was reportedly on the short list to become the next host of “The Daily Show” but left to see what else might be out there. He’s found that a CNN gig was.

The new series is called “Have I Got News For You,” and it’s CNN’s version of a British series with panelists who are quizzed about that week’s news.

Quoting

“The reason I’m staying at TNT is so that people can keep their jobs.”

Charles Barkley, on “The Dan Patrick Show,” on changing his mind and returning for another season as an NBA analyst on “Inside the NBA.”
