TYLER, Texas (KETK) – The Empowerment Community Development Corporation is celebrating African-American athletes who have gone for gold during current or past Olympic Games.

“We’re very proud to know that we have someone that went to the Olympics and won on that level,” Texas African American Museum board president Stanley Cofer said.
Starting Thursday, East Texans can view a signed boxing glove from George Forman, a picture with Natalie Hinds’ autograph and a replica of a leotard worn by Simone Biles in the organization’s Game Changers exhibit.

Guests at the Texas African American Museum will also be able to read about Tyler’s own gold medalist Robert Taylor, who sprinted at the 1972 Summer Games.
“We have a story about Mr. Robert Taylor, his journey that he took at the Olympics,” Cofer said.
Glen Johnson, a Tyler resident, loves watching the Olympics and had to stop by to see the exhibit. He believes it’s important for children to see African Americans achieve their goals and become legends.

“When I look at the history of where a lot of our African-Americans got their start it just bless my heart to see us recognizing them, you know, the way we are,” Johnson said.
Johnson’s daughter was almost one of the names in the exhibit, but she had other goals in life.
“She actually got a gold in triathlon in the junior Olympics, but she wanted to go to medical school, she wanted to be a doctor, that was her dream,” Johnson said.
Johnson hopes the Game Changers exhibit can spark interest in future generations. The Texas African American Museum doesn’t have a date on when the exhibit will close but invites everyone to come out Thursday through Saturday to see the new items.
