United States President Joe Biden has declared he is “not confident at all” there will be a peaceful transfer of power in the months after the election should Donald Trump be defeated.
Biden withdrew from the presidential race last month amid mounting pressure to end his re-election campaign following a dire debate performance against the Republican nominee.
Speaking to CBS in his first interview since dropping out of the 2024 race, Mr Biden was asked if he was confident there will be a “peaceful transfer of power” in January next year should Trump lose the election.
“If Trump wins, no, I’m not confident at all,” Biden said, before correcting himself as he continued his response.
“I mean if Trump loses I’m not confident at all. He means what he says. We don’t take him seriously. He means it. All this stuff about, ‘If we lose, it’ll be a bloodbath.'”
Biden added: “You can’t love your country only when you win.”
Trump previously warned of a “bloodbath” should he lose the November 5 election during a campaign rally in Ohio earlier this year.
The former president’s remarks sparked a wave of controversy, coming under fire for what some critics described as a “violent” choice of language.
The 78-year-old took to his online platform Truth Social amid the criticism to double down on the remarks, saying the comments were in reference to the future of auto manufacturing.
Trump took aim at the Democratic Party for taking his comments out of context, claiming they “pretended to be shocked” as his use of the word “bloodbath”.
“They fully understood that I was simply referring to imports allowed by Crooked Joe Biden, which are killing the automobile industry,” Trump wrote at the time.
Mr Biden announced he was bowing out of the election race in a letter titled “My Fellow Americans” shared on social media on July 21.
He said it has been the “greatest honour” of his life to service as President, but claimed it was no longer “in the best interest” of the country to keep running in the election race.
“And while it has been my intention to seek reflection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he wrote at the time.
“I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.
“For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work.”
Vice President Kamala Harris has since secured the presidential nomination of the Democratic Party ahead of voters heading to the polls in three months’ time.
