Family of late music legend wants no part of Donald Trump’s ‘campaign of hate’

The family of the late singer Isaac Hayes is threatening legal action against Donald Trump after the 2024 presidential candidate used one of Hayes’ songs during a political rally without the family’s permission.

Trump played the song “Hold On, I’m Comin’” at the end of his rally in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, Aug. 3. The song was written by Hayes and David Porter and performed by the R&B duo Sam & Dave.

However Isaac Hayes III, the son of the late musician, was not happy that Trump used the song.

“Once again, the estate and family of @isaachayes DID NOT approve the use of “Hold on I’m coming,’” Hayes wrote on X Saturday. “We and our partners at @primarywave are taking legal action to stop the unauthorized use of this song.”

The younger Hayes went on to write, “Donald Trump represents the worst in honesty, integrity and class and want no association with his campaign of hate and racism.”

The family of Hayes, who died in 2008, has fought for years to keep Trump from using the song, BLAVITY reported. Hayes’ family first expressed this in 2022 X post on the late singer’s profile.

“The estate and family of Isaac Hayes DID NOT approve and would NEVER approve the use of “Hold on I’m coming’” by Sam and Dave by Donald Trump at this weekends @NRA convention,” the post reads. “Our condolences go out to the victims and families of #Uvalde and mass shooting victims everywhere.”

Hayes’ family is among two dozen artists or their families and estates who have have objected — and even threatened legal action — to Trump using their music at events.

These artists include Adele, Aerosmith, the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Guns n’ Roses, Leonard Cohen, Linkin Park, Neil Young, Nickelback, Ozzy Osbourne, Panic! at the Disco, Pharrell Williams, Phil Collins, Prince, Queen, R.E.M., Rihanna, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Village People and the White Stripes, Variety reported.

In March, the estate of late Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor demanded that Trump stop playing her song “Nothing Compares 2 U” at his rallies.

“Throughout her life, it is well known that Sinéad O’Connor lived by a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness, and decency towards her fellow human beings,” a joint statement from O’Connor’s estate and her longtime label Chrysalis Records said, according to BBC. “It was with outrage therefore that we learned that Donald Trump has been using her iconic performance of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ at his political rallies.”

The family of Tom Petty also banned Trump from using Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” in 2020, stating that “the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind.”
