Following a breakthrough season, Nebraska soccer is included among some of the sport’s perennial powers in a preseason poll.
The Huskers are ranked sixth in the preseason United States Soccer Coaches Poll. NU returns 10 starters from last year’s group that won the Big Ten regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.
Defending champion Florida State tops the poll, followed by Stanford, BYU, Penn State and Clemson. Nebraska will play each of the five other ranked Big Ten teams this season: Penn State (No. 4), UCLA (No. 11), Michigan State (No. 13), Wisconsin (No. 19), Southern California (No. 23) and Iowa (No. 25).
Nebraska will have to replace prolific goal scorer Eleanor Dale, who led the nation last season with 28 goals and was a finalist for the most prestigious individual award in the sport.
Sarah Weber and Jordan Zade are among the Huskers’ key returners. Weber, a Gretna graduate, has 32 career goals entering her senior season.
Nebraska will play its second and final exhibition of the season at Oklahoma on Friday. The Huskers’ season opener is at home against Oklahoma State on Aug. 15.
