The USA took down 2016 Olympic champion Brazil, 3-1 (26-24, 28-30, 25-19, 25-19) in Monday’s quarterfinal round to get to within a match of playing for a gold medal. The last time the American side played for gold was in 2008, which featured a 3-1 victory over Brazil and USA’s third title, which is tied for most all-time with Brazil and the former Soviet Union.
Poland reached the semifinal round on the strength of a 3-1 win (25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 25-20) over Slovenia in the quarterfinal round. The Olympics started for Poland with a 2-1 mark in Pool B with wins over Egypt (3-0) and Brazil (3-2) and a loss to Italy (3-1) to earn a quarterfinal bid.
