PARIS (Gray News) – United States’ Sarah Hildebrandt has won gold in the 50-kilogram weight class women’s freestyle final, joining her teammate Amit Elor in the winner’s circle at the Paris Olympics.

Hildebrandt won 3-0 against Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez Wednesday.

The 30-year-old scored a 2-point takedown during the first half. She was awarded another point when Guzman Lopez was penalized after an activity period expired.

“Athletes, and wrestlers, in particular, we make this so serious. And it can be miserable sometimes, it’s already a hard sport” Hildebrandt said in an interview after her win. “I love this sport, it’s so much fun. I’m to enjoy every second of it. I’m going to smile as much as I can.”

Her opponent in the finals match was initially to be India’s Vinesh Phogat, however, Phogat was disqualified since she did not make weight Wednesday morning. She has since filed an appeal.

Hildebrandt won against Mongolia’s Otgonjargal Dolgorjav 5-0 for her spot in the finals match. She also defeated China’s Ziqi Feng 7-4 and Algeria’s Ibtissem Doudou 10-0.

This is Hildebrandt’s second time making the Olympic podium. She won bronze during her Olympic debut at the Tokyo Olympics.

Hildebrandt is the fourth woman to win an Olympic gold in wrestling for Team USA.

She joins fellow wrestler Elor, who won gold Tuesday in the 68kg class and is now the youngest U.S. wrestler to win gold.

“It has to come from here first, not from somebody else,” Hildebrandt said referring to the desire to win. “Amit is an amazing example of that. She’s younger than me but inspires me in every way.”

Helen Maroulis won gold at the Rio Olympics and Tamyra Mensah Stock also won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

Maroulis will have a chance to become the first U.S. woman to win two gold medals in freestyle wrestling. She wrestles in the 57kg weight class on Thursday.
