The first week of the Illinois State Fair means fun for the whole family and enough sugary food to keep kids bouncing the entire day.

But the fair isn’t the only thing going on this weekend. Here’s a look at five things to do in the Springfield area this weekend.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. The show offers a fantastic creative opportunity for rich costumes and sets, as well as the chance to perform some of the best-known songs from the past 30 years.

Where: The Muni outdoor theater, 815 E. Lake Shore Drive, Springfield

More: Tickets range from $12 to $38, depending on certain discounts for senior citizens and students.

Explore Sagachris Lake State Park

What: Looking for fresh air on the water with stunning views? Head to Sagachris Lake State Park to enjoy the weekend however the family wants. With fishing spots and multiple locations across the park near the lake, there are several walking trails in the 3,000-acre park.

When: Whenever you feel like it.

Illinois Statewide Artist Showcase

What: The Illinois Artist Showcase has been representing the art of Illinois since 2021, highlighting the work of talented professional artists ages 21 and above who are living and working in Illinois. The showcase was originally created in response to the discontinuation of the professional art exhibit at the Illinois State Fair and is hosted by the Springfield Art Association to highlight exhibits.

When: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: The Springfield Art Association, 700 N. Fourth St., Springfield
