USA’s Cole Hocker upsets favorites to win gold in men’s 1500m race

(Gray News) – American Cole Hocker won the gold medal in the men’s 1500m final on Tuesday, one of the most anticipated races in Olympic track and field.

He set an Olympic record with his time of 3:27.65.

Hocker’s win was a shocking upset. He was listed as much as a 30-1 long shot in the race.

The race was also Hocker’s personal best by more than 3 seconds.

Josh Kerr of Great Britain, who was a favorite to win, took the silver medal with a time of 3:27.79, a national record for Great Britain.

Yared Nuguse of the United States won the bronze with a time of 3:27.80, a personal best.

The other favorite, Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway, finished fourth.

Several other runners in the field set national records for their countries or ran personal bests, according to the Olympic results page.

It was the first U.S. win in the race since Matt Centrowitz took gold in 2016. This is the first time Americans put two men on the podium since the Stockholm Games in 1912.
