If you like to hike and love New England’s fall foliage colors, I may have something for you to consider. Vermont’s Long Trail stretches from Massachusetts to Canada.
VisitTheUSA.com says, “This 438-kilometer span offers natural solitude and incredible New England vistas that hikers and adventure-seekers can find only here.” The site says the Long Trail is “the oldest long-distance trail in the USA,” and it’s only a short drive from home.
Green Mountain Club, which maintains the trail, says the Long Trail “follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts-Vermont line to the Canadian border.”
The Long Trail, built between 1910 and 1930, was “the vision of James P. Taylor and later became the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail.” The Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail share about 100 miles of trail in the southern part of the state.

VisitTheUSA.com says, “Hiking in the fall demands a visit to the top of Stratton Mountain. A fire tower at the summit is open to the public, providing a gorgeous panorama of red, yellow, and orange New England foliage.”
There are lodges, inns, restaurants and taverns along the trail for rest and nourishment. There are also 70 backcountry campsites available.
The Long Trail is 272 miles with 166 miles of side trails. It is “perfect for day hikers, overnighters, and thru-hikers.” Those who hike the full trail are referred to as “End-to-Enders.”
VistTheUSA.com has information about shorter hikes and sidetracks. The site also offers it’s “must-see spots.” The site provides driving instructions from Massachusetts.
