Husker-filled USA volleyball team wins Olympic quarterfinal

The United States women’s volleyball team, which has three ex-Nebraska players, cruised to a sweep of Poland in a quarterfinal match at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday in Paris.

With the 25-22, 25-14, 25-20 win, Jordan Larson, Kelly Robinson Cook, Justine Wong-Orantes and the rest of the Americans advance to Thursday’s semifinals and will play Brazil. An official start time for that match will be announced later Tuesday.

The Americans had the advantage in kills, 44-30. Andrea Drews and Avery Skinner both had 12; Kathryn Plummer added eight. Larson came off of the bench and provided three kills and a block. Cook had one kill.

After a pair of breezy sets, the U.S. team overcame a deficit that swelled to six points early in the third.

Wong-Orantes started for the Americans and led the team with 14 digs. Larson and Cook came off the bench.

The Americans are now guaranteed two more matches in Paris. With a win against Brazil on Thursday, the U.S. would return to the gold-medal match, which is 6 a.m. Sunday. A loss sends the Americans to the bronze-medal match, set for approximately 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

Brazil beat the U.S. for the first time in five years at the Volleyball Nations League in May in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
