AUGUSTA (WGME) — With less than a month until a new school year begins in Maine, the push to get ready is on.
That includes a big summit underway in Augusta.
Hundreds of educational professionals have gathered this week for the Maine Department of Education annual summit.
The goal is to overcome challenges they may face in the upcoming school year.
“I think one of the biggest challenges in education in general is that it is always evolving and changing, and so trying to keep up with those changes can be hard, so coming to places like this gives us that leg up to learn about what is happening and how we can adjust to be better prepared,” high school science teacher Allyson Gilbert said.
Part of the discussion Tuesday was the use of cell phones in schools and what districts can do about all apps and technology that come with those phones.
“There are wonderful, wonderful applications for technology and knowledge at your fingertips, and it opens the world to students, but it’s about learning to use technology in a reasonable way and that’s something that adults and students, I don’t think we should ever stop learning that,” high school teacher Elizabeth Holub said.
Tuesday’s theme was supporting the whole student and school community.
“This event, it’s kind of like our big Super Bowl, we are able to get fresh, new, exciting ideas going into our new season of teaching,” Waldo County Teacher of the Year Shilo Burnham said. “We are able to connect and grow from one another in ways that are inspiring and also help to boost our own strengths in ways that are going to help our students grow.”
The summit goes two more days, with a total of more than 150 presentations spanning several topics and themes.
