La Jolla service clubs seeking guests for weekly talks – San Diego Union-Tribune

Service clubs in La Jolla do a lot for the community through projects, events and fundraisers. And this year, the community could help them in return.

Several service clubs are seeking speakers for their meetings in coming months or would like to add a few new speakers to the roster and are looking to the public to help fill those spots.

Kiwanis Club of La Jolla

“Having a roster of possible speakers is always ideal, and finding these people is an ongoing process,” said Kiwanis Club of La Jolla member Suzanne Weiner. “Members like to hear from a variety of speakers representing a broad range of topics. They can come from for-profit businesses or nonprofit organizations. Some speakers have been local authors or adventure travelers and they talk about their experiences.

“Some of the favorite programs revolve around music. For example, twice a year students from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts perform at a meeting. [That is] always a popular meeting program.”

The Kiwanis Club meets at noon the second and fourth Fridays of each month at the La Jolla Community Center. Speakers are given about 30 minutes to speak and answer questions.

“The goal is to bring speakers with a variety of backgrounds to keep the programs interesting and fresh,” Weiner said. “Our members appreciate learning about organizations, community activity, etc., that they haven’t otherwise heard about.

“The Kiwanis Club of La Jolla is made of adults who, while bringing a wide variety of backgrounds and different levels of community involvement, all want to work together on behalf of the community. So it’s a collegial group. Many members are still employed, while others are retired.”

La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club

For those who can rise to the occasion, the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club is seeking speakers for its early-morning meetings every Thursday. Currently, Aug. 15 is available.

“The subject doesn’t really matter; what we want is a good speaker that is passionate about whatever they want to speak about,” said club President Trip Bennett. “You’ll find we take our service work seriously, but not ourselves. … [The] weekly meeting’s primary intention is to continually keep us all together with some fellowship and have a little lighthearted fun. This is why we want and usually have good speakers.

“All of the real service work is done outside the weekly meetings via cluster groups formed to service a particular community we all agree on.”

The Thursday meetings begin at 6:58 a.m. at the La Jolla Shores Hotel. The gatherings feature a social period, breakfast, an invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance and the speaker. They usually end by 8:30 a.m.

Rotary Club of Torrey Pines

With weekly meetings that alternate between in person and online, the Rotary Club of Torrey Pines is looking for speakers on local or veterans and military issues.

The club meets at noon Wednesdays, either at the Sheraton La Jolla hotel or via Zoom.

Program director Gordon Shurtleff said speakers currently are needed for the in-person meetings Aug. 28 and Oct. 9.

“We’re doing good otherwise,” he said. “We have fabulous programs. We are a very close-knit group of members that gets things done in the community through projects. We have a club foundation and distribute money to different causes in the area, but we need to know about those causes.

“We’re an older group and would appeal to pre-retirees and retirees because of the programs.”

The Rotary Club of Torrey Pines was founded in 1964 and considers its hallmark to be “the relaxed fellowship enjoyed by all the members,” both at the Wednesday lunch meetings and at several social events. There also is a wine club within the larger membership.

Rotary Club of La Jolla

The Rotary Club of La Jolla hasn’t had a particular problem with obtaining speakers, though it would like to  add some to its roster of people to call when needed, said member Bob Teaff.

“We’re always on the lookout for speakers so we can put them in the queue,” Teaff said. “We’re not looking for one field or profession … we want a broad range of them. We want diversity. The members are interested in what is happening in the community that can tell us what’s going on.”

He said political leaders or candidates have spoken at the weekly meetings, but in those cases, opposing candidates also are invited to speak.

The club meets at noon Tuesdays at the La Valencia Hotel. It has a social event about once a month.

La Jolla Community Center

The Peer Learning Collaborative is looking for facilitators for its sessions at the La Jolla Community Center.

The program features courses lasting three to five weeks, depending on the instructor. They include weekly lectures led by a community volunteer with expertise in the subject, followed by refreshments and conversation about the topic.

Leaders are working on the 2025 schedule, and Peer Learning Collaborative founder Susan Lieberman said “we want to hear from people in the community who would like to share what they know with others in this format.”

The La Jolla Community Center is seeking speakers for its Distinguished Speaker Series in the fall and the ongoing Lunch & Learn series.

“We are constantly looking for interesting speakers for topics ranging from science and technology to preventive medicine, travel, authors and more,” said center Director Nancy Walters. “We feature community partners to educate on elder fraud prevention, fall prevention, gardening and more. We would love to hear from the community about interests we haven’t covered and/or possible speakers.”
