Utah football ranked No. 13 in preseason coaches poll for 2024 season

SALT LAKE CITY — College football rankings are back after USA Today released the first official preseason rankings of the season.

Utah football opens up the season ranked No. 13 in the initial preseason coaches poll — now dubbed the US LBM Coaches Poll — and the highest-ranked team out of the newly expanded Big 12.

The Utes are one of five teams from the Big 12 ranked in the preseason poll, with Kansas State as the next-highest ranked team at No. 17, followed by Oklahoma State (18), Arizona (21) and Kansas (24).

West Virginia, Iowa State, UCF and Colorado all received votes but did not garner enough to be included in the initial preseason rankings.

Utah was the projected favorite to win the Big 12, narrowly beating out Kansas State in the team’s first season in the Big 12. Utah is considered the favorite largely due to Cam Rising returning to the field for what will be his last season with the Utes.

At the top of the preseason rankings remains a familiar name in the Georgia Bulldogs. The SEC team that missed out on a potential three-peat last season checks in as the No. 1 team, securing 46 of the possible 55 first-place votes of the US LBM “Board of Coaches.”

Behind the Georgia is No. 2 Ohio State, followed by Big Ten newcomer Oregon at No. 3, SEC newcomer Texas at No. 4 and Alabama at No. 5. The Buckeyes received seven first-place votes, with the Longhorns and Wolverines receiving one apiece.

Though the coaches poll marks the start of preseason rankings, the Associated Press remains the go-to poll during the season until the official College Football Playoff rankings are released later in the season. The preseason AP Top 25 will be released Monday, Aug. 12.
