NJ Turnpike history and facts you didn’t know: Video

The New Jersey Turnpike is the most heavily traveled toll highway in the U.S. In 1951, it became the third modern-day toll road in the nation.

Leaf peeping season is upon us, and people will soon hit the Pennsylvania trails and countryside to behold the Keystone State’s sensational fall foliage.

But if you want to save a few dollars while doing so, you should try to avoid Pennsylvania’s toll bridges and roads, as they are some of the most expensive in the nation.

Pennsylvania’s road tolls are among most expensive

Pennsylvania’s road tolls, administered by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, are the most expensive in the lower 48, trailing only Alaska, which has the most expensive average fee per toll at $10.63, according to a recent report from the Suzuki Law Office.

The Suzuki Law Office analyzed data from the Federal Highway Administration to reach its findings.

“Pennsylvania is home to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, one of the world’s most expensive toll roads. As the second-ranked state for toll costs, the average toll is a hefty $9.92, costing an estimated 26 cents per mile,” read Suzuki Law Office’s findings. “Colorado ranks third in the nation for toll costs, with an average toll price of $9.74.”

As for Alaska, drivers pay an average of $10.63, or $4.25 per mile, to use the 2.5-mile Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel.

The New York Thruway Authority joined Pennsylvania in the top-ten of most expensive toll road systems, with has an average of $7.20 per toll, or $.43 per mile.

When does leaf-peeping season begin in Pennsylvania?

Leaf peeping season generally begins in late September.

“In northeastern Pennsylvania where the Poconos region is located, the trees typically begin to put on their fall colors in mid-September, reaching their most vibrant hues in early to mid-October,” read a fall foliage guide from the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau. “In southern Pennsylvania, the peak of fall foliage is usually a few weeks later in late October.”
