Ohio recreational marijuana sales are expected to begin soon for adults who are 21 and older. Here are some things to know.

Recreational marijuana sales in Ohio will start next week.

The Division of Cannabis Control said Friday that it intends to issue the first dual-use certificates of operation to dispensaries on Tuesday. The announcement came weeks after the agency gave preliminary approval to medical marijuana dispensaries, growers and processors that want to enter the adult-use market.

Ohioans voted last November to legalize marijuana for adults 21 and older.

“There will be no sales over the weekend,” said Jamie Crawford, a spokesman for the division. “We will provide a formal announcement on Monday.”

Dispensaries across Ohio learned Friday that they will receive certificates of operation and can open for recreational consumers Tuesday, provided they tick a few final boxes. An email from the division obtained by the USA TODAY Network Ohio Bureau said licensees must update their information in the state’s tracking system and tell local officials they intend to begin sales.

Dispensaries that plan to launch adult-use sales Tuesday include:

“I feel honored to be part of this historic event,” said Brian Wingfield, owner of Ohio Cannabis Company. “I’m looking forward to serving all Ohioans medical and recreational.”

Businesses with provisional licenses had to meet several requirements to receive a certificate of operation, including a test to show they can properly distinguish and sell medical and adult-use products. The state already greenlit cultivators, processors and testing labs to ensure there would be enough supply when stores open for recreational.

“We are stepping into a new future for Ohio where citizens will have access to safe products and communities will feel the benefits of this growing industry through tax revenue and job opportunities,” said Tom Haren, spokesman for the Ohio Cannabis Coalition.
