North Dakota ag-related businesses get state funding

Two North Dakota funds that support agriculture-related businesses provided a total of nearly $1 million in grants to 10 projects across the state in the second quarter of the year, according to the state Agriculture Department.

The Agricultural Products and Utilization Commission is providing a total of $123,750 to a project in Minot studying energy for greenhouse and container farms and to a Devils Lake snack business. APUC gives grants to developers of North Dakota farm-related products. The money typically is used for research, marketing, farm diversification, agriculture tourism and technology.

The state Agricultural Diversification and Development Fund is providing a total of $850,000 in grants to seven projects, including $150,000 to Key-Lix of ND, a Dickinson livestock forage supplement business.

Gross Cattle Co. in Napoleon is getting $50,000 to help with the construction of a large-scale beef enterprise. Four Star Ag, an onion business in Oakes, is getting $200,000 for automated sorting and packaging equipment.

The ADD fund is administered by the Agriculture Department and state-owned Bank of North Dakota to support new or expanding value-added-agriculture businesses. Other projects getting funding this quarter are a Fargo distillery, a Grafton potato farm, a Minto potato and sugar beet operation, and a Buxton bean company.
