Law enforcement to begin using new tool for impaired driving

North Dakota law enforcement will soon begin training for a new device to detect drug impairment in drivers.

Starting in fall, up to 40 law enforcement agencies will begin training for the SoToxa oral fluid device, according to the Highway Patrol. The device can be administered as a screening tool which can detect the presence of drugs including marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines and opiates.

A pilot program from January 2022 to July 2023 determined at least one drug was present in 83% of cases, with 51% of those cases identifying marijuana, the Patrol said.

“With 46% of samples from the pilot program indicating two or more drugs found in the subjects’ systems, this clearly demonstrates the need for law enforcement to have tools to identify drug-impaired driving in order to remove those drivers from the road,” Drug Recognition Expert State Coordinator Trooper Tarek Chase said in a statement.

Separately, law enforcement statewide will participate in a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign from Aug. 16 to Sept. 2, according to the Patrol.

The oral fluid testing device will likely not be issued in time for the August event, Chase told the Tribune.
