GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Miss Michigan USA has been crowned Miss USA.
Alma Cooper of Okemos won the title Sunday during the Miss USA Pageant. Cooper is a West Point grad and the first active-duty solider to win the Miss USA title, according to West Point.
She is also a Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford University, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in statistics, and the daughter of a migrant worker, Cooper shared in an essay published on the school’s website.

“As a little girl, I found power in my story and culture, one rooted in grit, hard work, and striving for something better,” Cooper wrote in the essay. “From my mother, a migrant worker from the age of six, I learned never to say ‘I can’t.’”
Cooper made the decision to attend West Point and follow in the footsteps of her father — who was an Army officer — after attending a weeklong program at the academy. She went on to be the only female mathematical science major in her class and, according to her social media, she graduated from West Point in the top 5% of her class.

“My heart is FILLED with gratitude and love for this journey and opportunity,” Cooper shared about competing for the Miss USA title in a July 13 social media post about winning the Miss Michigan USA crown.
