Team USA will not be winning consecutive gold medals in women’s 3×3 basketball following a loss to Spain in the semifinal round on Monday.

The 2024 squad featured Hailey Van Lith, Cierra Burdick, Dearica Hamby and Rhyne Howard. The U.S. led by one point with 13 seconds remaining in regulation, but Spain eventually pulled away in overtime and won by the final score of 18-16.

The American team may not go home empty-handed, as a bronze medal is up for grabs despite Monday’s defeat.

It was still a commendable run for the United States, as the team didn’t appear to be close to competing for a medal after getting off to a disappointing 0-3 start. However, the group responded with five straight victories which included a 21-13 win against China during Saturday’s knockout play-in game.

Van Lith finished with a team-high nine points against Spain, shooting 5-9 on one-point attempts and connecting on one of her two looks from two-point range. She also added five rebounds, although she struggled with ball security as she committed four turnovers.

Hamby led all players with seven rebounds while scoring five points without missing a shot. Burdick struggled to score, finishing with zero points and failing to connect on any of her three shot attempts.

The U.S. will now await the loser of Monday’s matchup between Canada and Germany. Team USA faced off against both teams earlier in pool play, with mixed results.

The United States was defeated by Germany to begin Olympic play, falling by the final score of 17-13. The squad fared much better against Canada, emerging victorious in overtime and securing the third consecutive win for the U.S. following a slow start.

After winning a gold medal in Tokyo during the first year of the event, Team USA won’t have an opportunity to secure a second finish on top of the podium. Van Lith and the rest of the 3×3 group will now contend for bronze on Monday at 3 p.m. ET.
