US Rep. Nikema Williams details her efforts for affordable housing, investment and closing racial wealth gap – WABE

United States Rep. Nikema Williams represents Georgia’s 5th congressional district. She says that every day, she seeks to uplift the legacy of the late Congressman and Civil Rights Leader John Lewis.

On Monday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Williams spoke with show host Rose Scott about her top priorities for Atlanta, Decatur, Sandy Springs, East Point and College Park. That includes affordable housing and good transportation to connect her constituents to good jobs.

During the conversation, Williams noted her district covers the largest consortium of HBCUs in the country. She says there’s a need for more investment in education, particularly HBCUs, to close the racial wealth gap.

Williams also criticized what she called the government’s displaced way of doing taxes – giving more money to billionaires than to America’s veterans.

But one of the biggest challenges Williams says she sees is Congress itself, especially when it comes to passing bipartisan legislation. Williams, who is chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, said she’s optimistic things will change after the November election.
