Hurricane Debby’s damaging winds, rain ashore in Florida. Where is the Big Bend?

Hurricane Debby was lashing Florida’s Big Bend area Monday morning, its track a reminder of 2023’s Hurricane Idalia, which brought flooding and heavy damage to that area.

As of early Monday morning, Debby’s maximum sustained winds were at 80 mph and the hurricane was moving north-northeast at 12 mph. Tropical Storm Debby left flood waters behind in areas of Southwest Florida including Fort Myers and north of that in Sarasota and areas of Tampa Bay.

But all eyes are on North Florida’s Gulf Coast on Monday.

Where is the Big Bend region in Florida?

Florida’s “Big Bend” is in the curve of Florida’s peninsula around the Gulf of Mexico and includes Jefferson, Taylor, Dixie and Levy counties.

The area “offers some of Florida’s best wilderness destinations. The Big Bend is a lush blend of salt marshes, tidal swamps, deep woodlands and an occasional slice of sandy beach,” according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The Big Bend area buffers the coastline from Florida’s capital city, Tallahassee, which is a little more than 20 miles from the Gulf Coast.
