Hurricane Debby made landfall in Florida on Monday, Aug. 5, 2024, near Steinhatchee as a Category 1 storm.
Steinhatchee, Florida is in the state’s Big Bend region, 70 miles west of Gainesville. It has a population of 514. The state’s “Big Bend” is in the curve of Florida’s peninsula around the Gulf of Mexico and includes Jefferson County, Taylor County, Dixie County and Levy County.
The Big Bend area buffers the coastline from Florida’s capital city, Tallahassee, which is a little more than 20 miles from the Gulf Coast.
Hurricane Idalia in 2023 also walloped Steinhatchee, Florida.
