New full-time Colorado football offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur met with the media on Friday and touched on a variety of subjects regarding his new-look unit. Overall, it became clear that Shurmur is keeping things simple while attacking last season’s deficiencies.
The Buffs’ offense took a huge step forward in 2023, but the little things prevented them from playing to their full potential. While CU had an explosive passing offense, it was too often stifled by either a lack of balance from the running game or a sack that would put the offense too far behind the chains.
Shurmur is looking to correct those issues this offseason and on Friday, he highlighted how Colorado’s offense can find success in 2024:
“We need to be able to run the ball,” Shurmur said. “When I say that, (doing so) when teams maybe are thinking that we are going to run the ball. We need to protect the passer better. Generally speaking, that’s what I like to call common sense football. When you’re throwing and catching, you want to do it at a high clip and complete passes. I think those are the important things.”
Colorado’s offensive line and running back rooms have been infused with talent in an effort to fix two of those issues, but it will take everyone to keep the Buffs’ scoring machine clicking on all cylinders.
